Society in 1950s Brazil rode on a mood of euphoria, culminating in the “New Wave” of the late 1960s, where artists experimented with new forms of expression in cinema and music. Europe was intrigued and enticed by this wave of cultural revolution. The soft, languid tones of cool jazz, with breathy vocals backed by virtuoso guitar, brought the bossa nova to world fame. One of its best-known classic examples is probably Quincy Jones’ instrumental, “Soul Bossa Nova”; “bossa nova jazz” is likewise an enduringly popular musical genre.
